Santiago Canyon College STEM Students to Publicly Unveil their Scientific Research Projects at Poster Symposium on Nov. 19

​(Orange, CA) — Beginning Monday, Nov. 16, Santiago Canyon College will present STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Week culminating with a Research Poster Symposium on Thursday, Nov. 19 with scientific research presentations from 13 promising community college students. The program is part of the Strengthening Transfer Education & Matriculation (STEM) ² grant that focuses on increasing the transfer rates in STEM fields to four-year institutions.

Earlier this year, thirteen students from Santiago Canyon College were selected to participate in an eight week Summer Research Experience. Receiving stipends of $5,000, the students worked in cutting-edge science laboratories at Cal State Fullerton where they were paired with research mentors in the Colleges of Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science. In total, 39 students from Santiago Canyon, Citrus and Cypress Colleges participated in the research project in Orange County.

The scholars from Santiago Canyon College will present their hypotheses and findings projects publicly on Thursday, November 19 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of Santiago Canyon College’s Science Center located at 8045 East Chapman Ave. in Orange.

STEM week activities for students include a liquid nitrogen and DNA isolation demonstrations. In addition, former Santiago Canyon student Graciela Maldonado, now in her second her at UC Irvine School of Medicine, will speak.
