David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross is a biting glimpse of American business, specifically the world of Chicago real estate salesmen. The journey of this play is boisterous, vulgar, tough, and raucous. Mamet’s characters are driven by the fact that second does not exist in their world which leads to their use of every sales trick imaginable to sell land and themselves. This play features Mamet’s views of America and its business ethics that are harsh, profane, and unremitting.
Mamet’s adapted his play into a film directed by James Foley in 1992. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) featured Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Lemmon won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival where the film premiered. The Santa Ana College production of Glengarry Glen Ross is directed by Chris Cannon, professor of theatre.
“Having acted in this play before, I know that it is one of the most demanding scripts that an actor can do,” said Cannon. “It was really our students’ choice to tackle this play because it is really meaty. We are so pleased to provide our theatre art students this challenging educational opportunity.”
