Santiago Canyon College to Host Author and Activist Dr. Gina Garcia as Keynote Speaker for Upcoming Presidential Inauguration.

(Orange, CA) Santiago Canyon College is pleased to announce Dr. Gina Ann Garcia as the keynote speaker at the upcoming presidential inauguration of Dr. Jeannie G. Kim, SCC's 7thpresident and first Asian-American to serve in that post, taking place at the college on May 11, 2023.

Dr. Garcia, a renowned scholar-activist, author, and speaker, is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy at the University of Pittsburg.

Her research centers on issues of equity and justice in higher education with an emphasis on understanding how Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) embrace and enact an organizational identity for serving minoritized populations.

In addition to her research and activism, Dr. Garcia is the author of Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges & Universities (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019), for which she won the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Book of the Year Award in 2020 and the editor of the book Hispanic-Serving Institutions in Practice: Defining “Servingness" at HSIs (Information Age Publishing, 2020). Her newly released book, Transforming Hispanic Serving Institutions for Equity and Justice (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2023), further examines how college and university leaders, faculty, and staff can transform their institutions into spaces that promote racial equity, social justice, and collective liberation.

Being a Hispanic Serving Institution itself, students, staff, faculty, and managers at Santiago Canyon College will have the opportunity to attend smaller interactive workshops and discussions with Dr. Garcia before attending the inauguration.

“I am thrilled to have Dr. Gina Ann Garcia joining us for such a momentous event," said SCC President Dr. Jeannie G. Kim. “As president of a Hispanic Serving Institution, I can think of no better way to reaffirm SCC's commitment to our diverse community of students than to have Dr. Garcia here to share her experience, knowledge, and passion for creating an environment of 'Servingness' for Latinx students everywhere."

The inauguration is open to the public. Please register to attend at https://sccollegefoundation.org/inauguration-2023.
