Santiago Canyon College Hosts Free Latin American Film Festival

​Three October Film Screenings Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

(Orange) - Santiago Canyon College (SCC) invites the community to attend a free Latin American Film Festival. The free screenings will be held on Friday, October 12; Friday, October 19; and Friday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. in D-101 at Santiago Canyon College, 8045 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange. Parking, admission, and snacks are all complimentary. An introduction and discussion of each film will be provided by SCC Modern Languages Department faculty.

The featured films are:

  • Friday, October 12: También la Lluvia (Even the Rain) - This 2010 Spanish film directed by Icíar Bollaín is about a film crew that travels to Bolivia to shoot a film depicting Christopher Columbus’s conquest of the “New World.” The crew runs up against escalating socio-economic and political conflicts when they arrive at Cochabamba, Bolivia, during the 2000 Cochabamba protests. The film won awards internationally, including an Ariel Award for Best Ibero-American Film and three Goya Awards. Additionally, the film was nominated for the 2011 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This film is in Spanish, Quechua, and some English with English subtitles.
  • Friday, October 19: Los Colores de la Montaña (The Colors of the Mountain) - This 2011 Colombian film directed by Carlos Arbelaez, is about everyday life of farmers and workers caught between guerrilla fighters and government troops as seen through the eyes of a child whose dream is to become a soccer goalkeeper. The film won awards in Colombia and at the 2011 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
  • Friday, October 26: Contracorriente (Undertow) - This 2009 Peruvian film directed by Javier Fuentes-León marks his directorial long-feature debut. Set on the Peruvian coast, the film is about a married fisherman who struggles to reconcile his devotion to his male lover within his town's rigid traditions. The film has won awards in Latin America, Europe, and U.S., including the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
