SCC Receives Donation to Support STEM Scholarships

(Orange, CA)—The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Foundation has once again received a $25,000 grant from Edison International. This is the sixth consecutive annual grant that the college has received from Edison. This charitable gift will support scholarships for students enrolled in the college's STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program.

“Santiago Canyon College is deeply grateful to Edison International for their ongoing support of scholarships for students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” said John Hernandez, Ph.D., SCC president. “Edison’s investment is so important to increasing the number of students who leave our college with competency in these areas of study.”

Students receiving SCC’s STEM scholarships are often afforded the opportunity to reduce or eliminate the time they spend working, giving them more time to focus on their schoolwork and increasing their chances of obtaining an associate degree or transferring to a four-year learning institution.

“Scholarships help our students spend more of their time on their studies, which increases their statistical chances of successfully achieving their educational goals. At SCC, we welcome financial investments in scholarships and programs by community partners like Edison. These investments in our students have a positive impact on student success,” said Hernandez.

Southern California Edison STEM Scholarships are awarded in May to SCC students in a variety of STEM-related fields, including computer science, information systems, mathematics, physics, and geology. In addition to filling out an application, students are required to maintain a 2.5 grade point average and carry a schedule with at least 12 units.

Edison International's support of charitable causes is entirely funded by shareholders. Southern California Edison customers do not pay for donations in their utility bills.
