Santa Ana College Faculty Authors New Textbook


​(Santa Ana, CA) - Interim dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Santa Ana College (SAC) Dr. Javier A. Galván published a new book entitled Modern Brazil. Ideal for high school and undergraduate students, this work paints a panoramic overview of one of the most powerful countries in the Americas.

Modern Brazil book coverWhile Modern Brazil provides a general historical and cultural background, it also focuses on issues affecting contemporary Brazil. Galván provides readers with a wide understanding of the historical past; foundation for cultural traditions; and understanding of the social structure in South America’s largest country. Additionally, the book presents a look into Brazil’s current society by highlighting accomplishments and challenges faced by Brazilians in the 21st century.

The text is a comprehensive look at all areas of Brazilian life and its history including government and politics; economy; religion; social classes; and ethnicity and more. The book also features a "Day in the Life,” which gives insight into the specific daily activities of various people in Brazil from teenagers to working adults in different fields. The book also provides key terms related to the reading and a chart of national holidays to provide at-a-glance information about Brazil's important religious and secular holidays.

Galván has authored several other books covering Latin America including Culture and Customs of Puerto Rico; Culture and Customs of Bolivia; Latin American Dictators of the 20th Century; and They Do What? A Cultural Encyclopedia of Extraordinary and Exotic Customs from Around the World.
