Santa Ana College Presents "Big Band Concert: An Evening of Jazz" on Nov. 18

(Santa Ana, CA)—On Friday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m., the Santa Ana College (SAC) Music Department will present its “Big Band Concert: An Evening of Jazz.” A collection of SAC music majors, SAC faculty, and community members will perform big band jazz in a diverse program including vocal performances, popular songs, jazz standards, and even one holiday tune. Some of the featured songs include “How High the Moon” often heard sung by Frank Sinatra, “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles, and “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. This event will be held at Phillips Hall Theatre and is open to the public.

“The program represents all styles of jazz and commercial music that should appeal to a broad range of audiences,” says Adam Gerling, a trumpet instructor at SAC. “It also allows many of the student musicians and guest musicians to be featured as soloists. The band has prepared many weeks for the actual concert. I expect it will be a polished performance and a great opportunity for both the audience and performers.”

The Big Band Concert goes back many years and is often the first experience that students have playing in college-level groups. SAC student Jason Truong is performing as a singer in the concert and says, “It’s been an awesome experience. I have spent time during practice learning how to best connect with the band, keeping watch on the conductor, and adjusting my sound to suit the band. This group gives me experience and a chance to learn in a positive environment.”

Michael Briones, an assistant professor in the SAC music department, will give brief remarks at the event. He has also performed in the ensemble as a student, about which he recalls, “This was one of my first experiences as a student playing in a college-level group. It literally changed the direction of my life. I wouldn’t be working here or doing the things I’m now doing if it weren’t for this opportunity.”

Tickets are available online, with general admission at $9.99, student tickets at $7.99, and tickets for children from ages 5-14 at only $5.00. Tickets can be ordered online at http://sac.edu/music/Events and can be held at Will Call for pickup or printed at home.
