The Chronicle of Higher Education Places Orange College on Its Honor Roll
(Orange, CA)—Santiago Canyon College is a great college to work for, according to a recent survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a top trade publication for colleges and universities.
The results released on July 18 in The Chronicle’s ninth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of 281 colleges and universities, with only 93 of the institutions achieving “Great College to Work For” recognition. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with Santiago Canyon College included among the large colleges and universities with 10,000 or more students. SCC received this designation for the second consecutive year. It was also named as one of 42 institutions recognized as “Great Colleges to Work for Honor Roll”.
This designation honors the institutions that The Chronicle considers as the “best of the best”. The colleges recognized with this honor continually received high marks across multiple survey categories.
“At Santiago Canyon College, we work collaboratively to create a workplace where employees feel respected and valued, and the results of this survey tell us again that we are achieving our goals,” said John Hernandez, SCC interim president. “This award is especially meaningful because it is the second time in two years that the college has earned this honor.”
Nine years in, Great Colleges to Work For® is one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country. This program recognizes colleges that get top ratings from their employees. In 2016, the annual report was based on a survey of over 46,000 people at 281 institutions: 189 four-year universities and colleges and 92 two-year colleges.
Based on survey results, SCC was recognized in the following 10 categories:
- Collaborative governance
- Compensation and benefits
- Confidence in senior leadership
- Facilities, workspace, and security
- Job satisfaction
- Professional and career development programs
- Respect and appreciation
- Supervisor/ department chair relationships
- Teaching environment
- Work/life balance
The survey is based on a two-part assessment process. The first part is an institutional audit of demographics and workplace policies. Then, a survey is administered to full-time faculty, administration, exempt professional staff, and a random sample of both non-exempt staff, and adjunct-faculty. The primary factor in determining whether to recognize an institution was employee feedback.
To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands employees nationwide.
