William Shakespeare was born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare lived until his 52nd birthday on April 23, 1616. For 23 of the 52 years Shakespeare was alive he is thought to have written 38 plays and 154 sonnets. Shakespeare is a celebrated playwright whose works have been performed countless times, adapted to film on several occasions, and read in classrooms throughout the world.

The film Othello (1995) directed by Oliver Parker will be shown. The film stars Laurence Fishbourne, Kenneth Branagh, Irene Jacob, and Nathaniel Parker. Othello (1995) is adapted from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice. This is the first cinematic version of the play released by a major studio that casts an African American actor to play the role of Othello.

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice was first performed in 1604 by the King’s Men for the court of James I. This play went on to be performed many times at The Globe and Blackfriars theatres. The plot was primarily based on the short story, Un Capitano Moro (“A Moorish Captain”) from Italian writer Cinthio Gaimbattista Giraldi’s book of short stories, Hecatommithi. Giraldi’s book was first published in Venice in 1566.

The English and performing arts departments at SCC will host the event alongside Santiago Canyon College Foundation and the Associated Student Government (ASG) at SCC.
