Orange—Santiago Canyon College (SCC) holds its thirteenth annual commencement exercises on Friday, May 18, at 4:30 p.m. on campus at Strenger Plaza. This year, 823 students are eligible to graduate.
The graduates range from 18 to 66 years of age. Ten families have more than one family member who will graduate, while three families will celebrate the graduation of twins.
The Class of 2012 valedictorian is Colton Long, a 22-year-old resident of Santa Ana. He graduates with a 4.0 grade point average, a degree in Liberal Arts: Arts, Humanities and Communication, and a degree in Liberal Arts: Multi-Cultural Studies. He is a member of the Santiago Canyon College Honors Program and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He served as the president of the SCC Associated Student Government. He is planning to continue his studies of cinematography and the motion picture arts at the University of Southern California.
“We are very proud of this year’s graduating class,” said Santiago Canyon College President Juan Vázquez. “The students in the class of 2012 have made the most of their time on our campus. On behalf of college faculty, staff and administrators, I wish each and every graduate much success in the future.”
This year’s commencement speaker (determined by student vote) is John West, professor of Anthropology and Sociology. He has taught at Santiago Canyon College since 1986, and has achieved 42 years of teaching and administrative service to the Rancho Santiago Community College District.
More than 1,200 people are expected to attend the commencement ceremony on May 18, including graduates, friends and families. A photo area for graduates will be available in the A/B Quad following the ceremony.
The non-credit commencement ceremony for SCC’s Orange Education Center will be Friday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m., also in Strenger Plaza on the SCC campus.
Santiago Canyon College is a public community college of Rancho Santiago Community College District, serving the residents of Anaheim Hills, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park. The college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and customized training for business and industry.
